Faculty of Dentistry, Riga Strandins University (Dental Medicine)


Riga Strandins University has long and interesting history. After WW2 there were only 2 professors of medicine left in Latvia: one of them was Professor Pauls Strandijns, who later became the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Institution had name of Rige Medical Institute and was established in 1950, which included faculties of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. In 1990 the Institute changed its name to Medical Academy of Latvia (Academia Medicinaei Latviensis), but it took only 8 years, until university was renamend to the Medical University of Latvia. Finally, in 2002 the Riga Strandins University obtained its current name.
This university is state founded university and the only university, which has traditionally been integrated in health system of country. Total staff has more than 1350 people, from which 600 are academics and 481 are not academical.
Currently, there are more than 7800 students (more than 1800 are international – from 80 different countries). There are 10 study programmes offered in English. Majority of international students study at Faculty of medicine (around 1500), then 190 students are enrolled at Faculty of dentistry. Rest faculties interest around 60 foreign students.


Program Dental medicine is taught at Faculty of Dentistry at Riga Strandins University.

Degree is internationally recognised in European union and most countries of the world.


Riga is more than 800 years old and with a blend of a medieval centre and a modern city. Riga is also a venue for cultural events in an international perspective – which is shown by the fact that it was the cultural epicentre of Europe in 2014 when Riga was awarded degree European Capital of Culture.

Scholarships offered:

Financial aid is provided to students of Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherland. Various types of tuition fees are provided to students based on their academic performance, social grounds and than to Indian, Chinese and Sri Lankas students. Average share of tuition fee is around 15%.

Accomodation for students:

University does not provide accommodation for students. They may choose from following options: students hostels (Posh Backpackers, Rīga Style Hostel, Dome Pearl Hostel, Naughty
Squirrel etc) or finding apartment (average price is around 250€ per month) or sharing flat with schoolmates.

Study programmes
Dental medicine:

Dental medicine programme is full-time programme organised in 10 semesters (5 years with load of 300 ECTS credits). Education is conducted in English and ends with degree Doctor of Dental Surgery. Tuition fee is 14 000€ for 1st and 2nd year of Dentistry and 15000€ for 3rd, 4th and 5th year of dentistry. In addition to that, student must pay bond money deposit of 300€ and registration administrative fee of 1500€. There is no fee for dental materials.
Graduates are awarded degree DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery).

There were around 40 students accepted to study program of Dental medicine for academic year 2016/2017. Students form smaller groups, in which they held practicals or lessons. Program is attended by students from all over the world.

Study programmes:

There are following programs offered in English: General medicine, Dental medicine and Pharmacy. Program of Dental hygiene is not offered in English.

Number of students accepted each year:

In 2014, University received 107 applications in Dentistry and enrolled 55 people.

Tuition fees:

Tuition fee is 14 000€ for 1st and 2nd year of Dentistry and 15000€ for 3rd, 4th and 5th year of dentistry. Tuition fee for Dentistry covers price of dental materials.

Living costs:

Riga is capital of Latvia, which means, that living costs are higher in comparison with other countries. Structure of monthly living costs may be following: 250€ for rent, 200€ for food, 100€ for utilities and services, 30€ for entertainment plus unexpected costs of 100€. Conservative estimation is 730€ per month.

Admission criterias
Admission criterias:

There are following criterias for undergraduate students who would like to apply to RSU:
completed secondary education – student must present secondary-school leaving diploma which makes him/her eligible to continue studies at University in home country. Only applicants with passing grades will be considered (there is list of minimim admissions criterias/marks).
University also requires following subjects for at least 2 semesters and passing grade from every applicant.

English level requirements: Applicant must possess English language proficiency by submiting documents, that testify his/her level of English. List of accepted language certificates is following: IELTS (at least 6.0), TOEFL iBT (at least 80), TEOFL CBT (at least 213), TOEFL PBT (at least 550), GCSE (or GCE) (at least C level), Cambridge Certificate in Englich (Grade B at least). In case that applicant does not have any of these certificates, there is also chance to submit substitute proof of English speaking skills: grade from English from Secondar y school or official transcript from secondary school.
Applicant must be at least 18 years old

For program of Dental medicine (DDS) students must pass following programs at secondary school: chemistry and biology. Mathematics and physics are not obligatory.

Entrance examination

Applicants must comply with admission criterias. There is no entrance examination. Management of Faculty decides, which applicants will be admitted following various criterias, such as CV, educational background, motivation letter or grades from secondary school.
