Semmelweis University is located in capital of Hungary, Budapest and consists of Faculty of dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Health and Public sciences. It is one of the most renowned university in the central Europe region. According to the recently released QS World University Rankings 2016 placed Semmelweis University among the world’s best 151-200 universities in the categories of medicine and pharmacy.
University is also ranked first among the Hungarian universities.
Semmelweis university was founded in 1635, which makes it one of the oldest universities in Central Europe. University was also first which offered program for international students.
Faculty of medicine at Semmelweis University is the largest faculty of university – there are around 4000 students studying in English, German and Hungarian.
The biggest number of students in 2016 are from Iran (75), followed by Norway (60) and Japan (25).
Diplomas issued by Semmelweis University are recognized automatically in European Union automatically. The University is listed in the WHO’s directory of Medical
Schoolsand in the IMED / FAIMER directory. It is also recognised by the Medical Board of California, considered the gold standard for recognition in the USA.
In USA graduates need to take USMLE exam (United states medical licencing examination) ( Semmelweis university organises USMLE trainings for its students). Canada – Graduates need to take Medical council of Canada Evaluation Examination (MCCEE).
Israel – Semmelweis graduates must complete one year practice and pass a test before they can practice medicine in Israel.
India – Doctor of medicine degree is equivalent to B.D.S degree in India.
Budapest is the capital and the largest city of Hungary, and one of the largest cities in the European Union and one of the most beautiful city in Central Europe region. Budapest is the country’s principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial, and transportation centre of Hungary. City consists of two historical parts: Buda and Pest. There is river of Danube flowing in the centre of Budapest, which provides for example direct connection on river with Bratislava.
Applicants may apply for Stipendium Hungaricum, which mission is to increase numbers of International students coming to Hungary. There are around 3000 students in the academic year 2016/2017 that began their studies in Hungary in the framework of the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme. The Programme is managed by Tempus Public Foundation.
Stipendium Hungaricum scholarships are available for bachelor, master, one-tier master, doctoral and non-degree programmes (preparatory and specialisation courses).
University does not provide accomodation for its students. Its their responsibility to find private accomodation in Budapest. Average cost of accomodation is around 300€ in Budapest.
Graduates are awarded degree Doctor of medicine (doctor medicinae universae, abbreviation is Dr. med. Univ). Programme lasts for 12 semesters (6 years). During the first 2 years, students learn the basic theoretical subjects, though clinical aspects are also incorporated from the beginning of their studies. The third year is still mostly theoretical, while the fourth and fifth years focus primarily on clinical subjects. Students spend their sixth year directly by the bedside, on clinical rotation which takes 37 weeks. At the end of the programme, students must submit a written thesis and pass a final examination.
Faculty has both English and German program of General Medicine. Regarding English program, there are 1700 international students from 70 different countries (together medicine and dentistry). Programme has started in 1989 and is still getting more and more popular.
Pass-rate of Anatomy in first year of study is around 50%. Pass-rate combined (other subjects such as chemistry, physics considered) should be even less.

Current enrollment at the Faculty of Medicine is 3200 students (all 6 years, Hungarian, English and German program together), at the Faculty of Dentistry 630, and at the Faculty of Pharmacy 649.
Fee for study program of General medicine is 9100 USD for one semester, which equals to 18200 USD per study year.
Fee for studying one year at Semmelweis University is 18200 USD, registration fee paid in 1st year is 220USD. Entrance Examination Fee is USD 250, in case that entrance examination is taken in Hungary.
Applicant must have at least 18 years and completed secondary school. Besides applicant must demonstrate strong motivation to study medicine and speak good English. He or she must submit documents (below) and take an entrance examination. Entrance examinations are organised around the world by representatives of Faculty. Applicant must be invited to entrance examination.

evolution, chemical background in Biology, the cell and its organisation, from cells to tissues, cell divisions, the physiology of living organism, basic ethology, reproduction and development of animals, genetics
Knowledge of English language is required and expected in order to be able to take entrance examination. University offers preparatory courses.

Fee for examination test (if entrance test is in Budapest, fee is 250 USD, if it is outside, it is 250USD plus local costs)
Transfers from another university to Semmelweis university are possible.
There were 20 people accepted as 3rd year transferred stundents in the year of 2015/2016. Two students from Debrecen, eleven from Szeged, seven people from Pecs. (the number of students from each school might be slightly different.)
Students wishing to transfer from different Hungarian University should contact English secretariat, submit documents, school track, syllabuses and wait for decision of Board of faculty.
