Medical school, University of Pécs (General Medicine)


University of Pécs is the oldest University in Hungary. It was founded in 1367 by King Louis the Great. Nowadays it is state University listed in the WHO´s directory of Medical schools and accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board.


Programme for international students started in 1984 with only 38 students – since then, number of students is growing continually. There are students from more than 65 countries currently studying in Pécs. Total staff of Medical school counts to 800 physicians and lecturers, hosts 360 physicians holding a Phd. degree and also 82 members who hold Doctor of Science degree (D.Sc.).
Faculty runs under ECTS credit system, which makes recognition of completed courses or transfers to another university easier.
Up to year of 2015, there were 810 students, that received Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree, 51 students who accomplished their Doctor of Dental Medicine studies (D.M.D) and 3 students with Pharm.D. diploma.


City of Pécs is fifth largest city in Hungary, close to borders with Croatia. In 2010 city was selected as European Capital of Culture, sharing title together with Essen and Istanbul. It has around 150 000 citizens. Pécs is place, where one of the oldest university – The University of Pécs is residing. This university was divided into 2 universities: Pécs University Medical School (POTE) and Janus Pannonius Tudományegyetem (JPTE). The POTE is known also as Medical School. From 2000 universities are combined under the name University of Pécs (PTE).
Pécs is beautiful historical center – there is Necropolis of Sopianae situated there (from UNESCO list), as well as Cella Septichora, The Cathedral, Hungarian Bishops Palace, Barbakan Tower, Citty Hall, Synagogue, Hungarian Academy of Science and many more.

Accomodation for students:

University does not offer accomodation for students – students must find private accomodation. The Admission office assists students to find a room or an appartment for student.

Study programmes
General medicine:

Programme of General medicine is taught in English and takes 6 years. Succesful graduates are awarded degree Medical Doctor (M.D.).

There are 10 semesters of pre-clinical studies and 2 semesters of Clinical rotations). Students are in direct contact with patient (bedside or operating theatre) which makes education much more practice oriented.
There are 3 modules at University of Pécs: Basic module, within which students become familiar with structure and functioning of the healthy body. After that, there is Preclinical module, where formation and features of the pathological processes are explained and students become acquinted with the basic patient examination skills. Clinical module is orientated toward the specific diseases and diagnostic and theoretical skills of students. Finally, clinical rotation is there in final, 6th year, where students carry out mostly medical activities under control of the teacher.
Tuition fee for General medicine is 15700 USD per academic year.

There are 150 students, that are accepted to English program of General medicine in Pécs each year.

Tuition fees:

Fee for General medicine programme is 15700 USD and payable in 2 installments (8500 USD and 7200 USD). Programme takes 6 years of total.

Living costs:

The average living expenses for students are around USD 700 per month and depends on living standards of student.

Admission criterias
Admission criterias:

Applicant must graduate from high school / senior secondary school before he/she will be admitted to University (document must be submitted until the registration). The applicants are expected to have strong basic knowledge in biology and chemistry. If there are 2 years from graduation from secondary school, it may be advised to take a refresher course in the required subjects.
Great knowledge of English language is also expected.

Students with B.A. or B.Sc. Degree may be accepted directly into second year of study: subjects from 1st yeat (Chemistry, Biology, Biophysics, Anatomy, Histology and Embryology) may be recognised in that case.

Entrance examination

Entrance examination consists of a written and an oral interview and are mostly focused on biology, chemistry and physics. Topics:
