Medical university in Sofia is the oldest medical institution in Bulgaria which was founded in 1917. There were many well-known professors and teachers from Medical University in Sofia: Methody Popov, Vladimir Markov, Vassil Mollov, Stoyan Kirkovich or Soyan Belinov.
Since establishment of University, there were more than 60 000 graduates from Bachelors, Masters and Postgraduate study programs (4800 foreign students included). Currently, you can meet more there than 6200 students (1600 international students included) from all over the world: Turkey, India, Macedonia, Greece, Cyprus and others.
Medical university is part of SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme from 1999 and is fully involved in international cooperation. University runs under ECTS credit system, which makes study achievements fully comparable with students from other countries. This fact also make transfers of students possible from another University.
There are 4 faculties: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Publich Health and Faculty of Pharmacy. In addition to that, there is also Language training and student sport center and Medical college Sofia.

Diploma from Medical University in Sofia is fully recognised in European union and in most coutries of the world. Programme has GMC accreditation (no PLAB test is required) for medicine programme and GDC accreditation (no ORE test is required) for dentistry programme.
Medical University is situated in Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, which is political, economical and cultural center of country. There are 9 universities in Sofia. Sofia has also signficant historical value – there are prescious historical monutments like Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevski, Church of Nikolai, Mosque of Banja Bashi, Archeological museum, National gallery or Ethnological museum. There is International airport in Sofia, which has direct connection with cities like Athens, Burgas, Moscow, Munich, Manchester, Prague, Zurich, London, Kiev and many more. Most popular type of transportation within city is public transportation and taxis, which are quite affordable in comparison with other capitals in Europe.
University does not provide accomodation or dormitories for students. Students must find private rents on their terms or with rental company.
General Medicine course is taught in English entirely and has duration of 6 years (10 semesters of academical training and 2 semesters of clinical internship). First 4 semesters are dedicated to pre-clinical studies and theory; after that, there are 6 semesters focused mainly on clinical studies. Finally, there is one year of medical internship with duration of 310 days. Summer internship is planned during 2nd, 3rd and 4th year. Tuition fee is 7000€. Students need to pass State exam in order to obtain degree of doctor (M.D.).
Tuition fee for General medicine is 8000€ per one study year.
Living cost per month in Sofia are 600€, which equals for 6000€ per one study year.
Total cost for one study year are around 14 000€ per study year (health insurance, which is required for non-EU citizens is not included).
The most important criterium is to complete secondary education, which makes them eligible for higher education institution in their home country. Then they need to have grades from Biology and Chemistry in their secondary education diploma.
After submitting all documents, they are sent to the Ministry of Education and Science of Bulgaria, which issue certificate on the rigth to study at MU Sofia. After applicant receive it, he/she should pay certain percentage of tuition fee for one semester (that means 50% of tuition fee for academic year).
Good command of English is required: all students must take English language test, that costs 120€ and which is held at the Center of Language Training. In case that student fails at this test, student can take English preparatory course (with cost of 4800€).
Documents that need to be submitted for application must be delivered in person or via appointed representative. Documents sent by fax, post or e-mail are not taken into consideration.
Documents needed for an entrance examination are following:
a) Registration form
b) A copy of the secondary school leaving diploma and a copy of document equivalent of the diploma for secondary school
c) Document stating, that applicant has right to contiue his/her studies at tertiary university in his/her home country
d) Copy of passport / ID card
e) Medical healthcare certificate issued within one month before the date of application translated into Bulgarian and verified by Bulgarian Embassy or Consulate in the country, when it was issued
f) 6 passport size photos
g) Declaration of authenticity of submitted documents
Following documents are needed for an enrollment of student:
a) Secondary school leaving certificate – original or validated copy
b) Official Health Certificate stating eligibility of student for tertiary education
c) two application form
d) Students record book model for Medical University
e) Identity card
f) 6 passport size pictures
g) Tuition fee receipt
h) Declaration on a form for every faculty /college/ in accordance with the Academic Council decision of 26 February 2003: “The students admitted provide themselves with all necessary workbooks and consumables for their education in the respective faculty/college/”.
Transfers of students are accepted. On the other hand, there is no guarantee, that student will be placed in higher studying year.
Student must study at least 4th, 5th and 6th year of given study program (so transfers to 5th or 6th year are not possible). In addition to documents, that student needs for application, he or she must submit also official transcripts from former University. This Transcripts must be translated in Bulgarian language. Only students, who have subjects of Biology and Chemistry on their School Leaving Certificate, otherwise they are not eligible for transfer. Documents for transfer must be delivered to University in person or via authorised representative. Documents that are send by fax, email or post are not accepted.
